Summer ‘24 Issue
Saya Date
She is bold, inventive, fiercely independent, and someone who thrives on embracing the unknown. An adventurous spirit with a fearless desire to create, Saya has already traversed so many universes in one lifetime: been an engineer, been a product manager, co-founded a tech startup, learned Argentine tango in India, and then went into filmmaking. With the release of her debut movie Tango Malhar—a daring, experimental film that blends cultures and challenges society’s conventions—Saya continues to push boundaries, never second-guessing herself, and always staying true to her vision.
Clare Zhang
Observant, witty, and curious, Clare finds both humor and earnestness in the everyday moments of life. As we wandered through San Francisco on our day off from work, she traced her life story, describing how she found her unique place in the world, from mastering mechanical engineering and thriving in product design engineering to honing her creative eye through digital art. Clare brings her passions to life seamlessly, always with thoughtful care, turning even the most mundane moments into something unexpectedly delightful—and hilariously human.
Alvaro Morales
When he is not the co-founder and the CEO of Orb, he is a first-time dad, and when he is not a literary savant, he is a film and TV buff. Cool, kind, and always down-to-earth, Alvaro is that rare blend of an introspective aesthete and a savvy engineer. His quiet curiosity and love for the arts, combined with his innate instincts for problem-solving, make him an anomaly in the tech world. Be it leading his startup or discussing literary realism over four-dollar dumplings, Alvaro brings a sense of levelheadedness and warmth to everything he does.
Adriana Ciccone
A trivia queen who was a contestant on Jeopardy? A skilled energy-optimization professional? A top-notch cook? Well, turns out she checks all the boxes. A product of many worlds, Adriana blends precision with creativity in every aspect of her life. Her greatest skill is her ability to navigate the nuances of intricate social dynamics, and yet her mastery of this is intentional, not innate. In a way, Adriana is a glitch in society’s matrix—someone who carves her own path and creates a reality that is entirely on her own terms.
Stephanie Wang
I spent a weekend with my friend Stephanie in the colorful, springtime Seattle, and the timing of our hangout could not have been better. Steph is moving into a new phase of life; her wedding is on the horizon, she is about to begin her tenure as a professor in computer science, and she will be setting up her own research group. Always balancing logic with creativity, Steph approaches this new chapter the only way she knows how: with a formidable intellectual rigor, a heart open to adventure, and a bright sense of humor, always on the lookout for the big picture and never ever sweating the small stuff.
